Skincare during pregnancy — what's allowed and what's not

Pregnancy changes your skin — and the list of ingredients you're allowed to use. Retinol stops, but hydration, centella and SPF stay. The complete, safe guide.

Skincare during pregnancy — what's allowed and what's not

Pregnancy does two things to your skin at once: gives you that famous "glow" — and makes it more sensitive than ever to irritation, spots and redness. And to complicate things, some of skincare's most effective ingredients must stop immediately. Here's the clear guide, no panic, no myths.

Stop immediately

  • Retinol / retinal / adapalene — topical vitamin A is off-limits for the whole pregnancy
  • Hydroquinone — strong spot-lightening agents
  • High-dose salicylic acid (medical peels) — small daily amounts in cleansers are considered safe, professional peels are not
  • Strong essential oils in high concentrations

If you used retinol before knowing you were pregnant — don't panic; just stop now and mention it to your OB at the next visit.

Safe and recommended

  • Gentle cleansing — Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Cleanser: fragrance-free, no stripping, ideal for hormonal skin that reacts to everything
  • Hyaluronic acid — the safest hydration there is; pregnancy skin loves water
  • Niacinamide — allowed; helps against hormonal spots (melasma) and redness
  • Centella asiatica — calming for reactive skin: SKIN1004 Poremizing Ampoule
  • Snail mucin — safe and regenerating: COSRX Snail 96
  • Azelaic acid — the only "active" allowed for pregnancy acne (Anua Azelaic Acid 10)
  • SPF every day — melasma ("the pregnancy mask") worsens with sun; SPF is your main defense

The ideal pregnancy routine — 4 steps

  1. Morning: gentle cleanser → hyaluronic/centella serum → soothing cream like Dr. Althea 345 → SPF
  2. Evening: gentle cleanser → snail mucin or centella → cream
  3. Stop: retinal, strong peels, essential oils
  4. Consistency over experiments — this is not the time to try ten new things

Dark spots (melasma) — the most common question

Hormones + sun = pigmentation above the lip and on the cheeks. It can't be lightened with products during pregnancy — but it is prevented with daily SPF and fades naturally after birth. Vitamin C and niacinamide enter the game afterwards.

This article is general guidance, not medical advice — for any doubt, your OB has the final word.
