Double cleansing — the Korean ritual that changes your skin

A single cleanse leaves SPF, oil and dirt behind — blocking everything you apply after. The Korean double cleanse fixes it in 2 minutes. Here's how to do it right.

Double cleansing — the Korean ritual that changes your skin

If you buy a €40 serum and apply it on a face "washed" with a single cleanse, you're throwing money away. SPF, natural oils and city grime form a layer no single cleanser fully removes — and your expensive serums simply sit on top of it.

Why one cleanse isn't enough

The impurities on your face are two chemically opposite types:

  • Oil-based: SPF, makeup, your skin's natural sebum, smog. Water doesn't touch them — oil and water don't mix.
  • Water-based: sweat, dust, dead skin cells. Oil doesn't touch them.

That's why double cleansing isn't luxury — it's chemistry logic: first an oil-based cleanser (dissolves oil), then a water-based one (dissolves everything left).

How to do it right — 2 minutes, every evening

Step 1: The oil/balm (60 seconds). On a dry face, take a walnut-sized amount and massage in circles — especially the nose, chin, forehead. You'll see SPF and makeup melting. Add a little water: the balm turns milky (emulsification) — that's the sign it's working. Rinse.

Step 2: The water cleanser (30–60 seconds). Now that the oily layer is gone, the second cleanser can actually reach your skin. Massage gently, rinse with lukewarm water.

Your face should feel clean but not tight. "Tightness after washing" isn't cleanliness — it's a damaged barrier.

Who should do it, who shouldn't

  • Every evening if you wear SPF (you should!) or makeup — so, practically everyone.
  • In the morning it's unnecessary — a gentle water cleanse is enough; skin only produced a little oil during sleep.
  • Very dry skin or rosacea? Choose fragrance-free balms and low-pH cleansers — harsh rubbing techniques are the only thing to avoid.

The Korean pair that does it right

Step 1: Dr. Althea Pore Refresh Grinding Cleansing Balm — a balm that melts into skin like oil and emulsifies fully with water. Removes the strongest SPF without rubbing and without leaving an oily film.

Step 2: Round Lab 1025 Dokdo Cleanser — Korea's most beloved cleanser, low-pH with mineral water. Cleans deeply without disturbing the barrier — zero tightness afterwards.

Bonus, for a weekend ritual: Arencia Fresh Green Rice Mochi Cleanser — an artisanal cleanser with a "mochi" texture from green rice, fermented for 170 hours. Cleanses and exfoliates so gently it can be used daily — an experience that makes you look forward to the evening.

What changes after 2 weeks

  • Pores look smaller — because they truly are cleaner
  • Breakouts "from nowhere" decrease — not magic, the blocked channels simply opened
  • Serums and creams suddenly "work" — because they now reach skin instead of the dirt layer

Double cleansing is the cheapest step with the biggest impact in all of skincare. Everything else you use is worth more when applied on truly clean skin.
