THE SKIN POÈME JOURNAL
From Skin Poème ↗Korean face masks — the types and how to use them right
Sheet, hydrogel or clay? Every mask type has its own job — and the biggest mistake is leaving it on too long. The complete guide, no mysticism.

The mask is the most misunderstood step of K-Beauty: some use it daily, some once a month, and most leave it on too long "for extra effect" — getting the opposite. Here's the truth about each type, and how to use it right.
Three types, three jobs
- Sheet mask — fast hydration and glow before an event; 15–20 minutes, no longer
- Hydrogel / gel mask — the advanced version: slowly melts as the skin "drinks" the serum; can stay for hours, even overnight
- Clay / wash-off — deep pore cleansing; this does NOT hydrate, it cleans. For the T-zone and blackheads
The choice isn't "which is best" — it's what your skin needs that week.
The golden rule most people break
Don't let a sheet mask dry on your face. When the sheet starts drying, the flow reverses: the mask pulls moisture out instead of giving it. 15–20 minutes, while it's still damp — not "until it dries".
How to use it — the exact steps
- Clean skin — a mask over dirty skin seals impurities in; cleanse first
- After toner/essence — damp skin absorbs better
- 15–20 minutes for sheet, 2–4 hours or overnight for hydrogel
- Tap the residue in, don't rinse — that expensive serum left in the packet? It's part of the mask: apply it to your neck and hands
- Seal with cream — the mask gives, the cream keeps; without it the hydration evaporates within the hour

The masks we chose
- Hydrogel: Medicube Pink Collagen Gel Mask — a collagen hydrogel that turns transparent as your skin absorbs it; wear it overnight, wake up with post-clinic skin
- Clay stick: SKIN1004 Poremizing Clay Stick — clay + centella in stick form, no messy fingers; 3 minutes for the T-zone and blackheads

How often?
- Sheet / hydrogel: 1–3 times a week — or before any event where you want photoshoot skin
- Clay: once a week for oily skin; every 10 days for dry
- Never both on the same day if your skin is sensitive — clay cleans, hydrogel fills; split them across different days
